Nigeria: Lagos Among 20 Cities To Get ‘Soot-Free’ Buses

Many of the vehicles in Sub-Saharan Africa, both petrol and diesel fueled, emit very high levels of black carbon emissions, or soot, which are amongst the most dangerous pollutants for public health and a major contributor to climate change. According to UN Environment, more than 80% of all buses sold globally emit black carbon. Studies have shown that the clean energy or soot-free buses being produced today can reduce these emissions by more than 99%.

Four bus and engine manufacturers (BYD, Cummins, Scania and Volvo Buses) who are working to produce buses equipped with low emissions technologies to tackle climate change and toxic air pollution have chosen 7 African cities: Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Abidjan, Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam as test cities for these new vehicles.

The 7 African cities will join 13 other cities: Bangkok, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Casablanca, Dhaka, Istanbul, Jakarta, Lima, Manila, Mexico City, Santiago, Sao Paulo, and Sydney to benefit from this technology.
