Eight million consumers will have access to electricity with the start-up on Thursday of the Cambambe Hydroelectric Power Plant II (AHC), with a capacity to produce 700 megawatts, said the Angolan Energy and Water Minister.
The 700 megawatts to be produced at the Cambambe II dam will be added to the 260 megawatts of Plant I, which has four generator sets of 65 megawatts each, for a total of 960 megawatts.
Minister João Baptista Borges, quoted by Angolan news agency Angop, said that the project for expansion and modernisation of Plant I, the construction of Plant II and the raising of the dam, with an estimated cost of US$2 billion, will provide a large amount of renewable energy.
He also said that to boost the power supply, a substation was built to supply electricity to the province of Luanda and all regions of northern Angola, and the interconnection with Gabela (Kwanza Sul province) is underway, which will supply energy to Benguela in the near future.
