Ethiopia's Megech Seraba Irrigation Project to Go Operational This Year

Megech Seraba pump irrigation project, one of the projects being undertaken by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MWIE), will be finalized before the end of the current fiscal year. However, the project, which was commenced 9 years ago, took 6 more years from the scheduled time. The delay is said to be because of problems on the original design.

Commenting on the development Manager of the Project, Yasin Workie, said Megech was 90 percent complete and would be fully finalized by June.

The project which is undertaken at an outlay of 1.2 billion Birr was financed by the World Bank and upon going operational it is expected to irrigate 4,040 hectares of land. 30,000 people will be able to irrigate their lands twice a year using the project.

According to Bizuneh Tolcha, Public Relations Director at the MWIE, the project will be operational in 2 months’ time.

The project consultant, BRL, would assume management role for the coming half a decade period, Yasin noted.
