Zimbabwe's Command Agriculture is Voluntary, Calming Those Concerned by Name

The command agriculture scheme is a voluntary programme and farmers are not being forced to participate in the government's special programme to increase maize production.
Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Joseph Made last week made the remarks as he explained to farmers that government's programme on maize production, command agriculture was optional and farmers had the right to choose not to be part of the programme.
Command agriculture is expected to increase maize production to two million tonnes and shall target at least 400 000 hectares of arable land out of which 20 000 hectares shall be fully or partially irrigated.
Addressing farmers at the first Zimbabwe National Farmers Union Congress in Harare Made said people were abusing the word "command" and the word does not have anything to do with farmers being forced to be part of the programme.
