Opinion: A Different Perspective of Farming's Contribution to Climate Change

With all of the politicking around climate change, it was refreshing to read Bruce E. Dale’s attempt to bring some chemical understanding to the debate (“Old MacDonald Had a . . . Climate Offender,” op-ed, July 11).

Whereas he is correct that CO2 released from the oxidation of food (derived from plants and animals via respiration) is closely balanced by the synthesis of food stuff by plants, CO2, water and the sun’s light; he is incorrect in averring that the CO2 released from fossil fuel oxidation is handled differently.
