Adapting to Green Economy Difficult for Rwanda

Rwanda's efforts to go green continue to suffer at the hands of practices that are not in sync with good environmental care.

As such Rwanda's aspirations to be a developed climate-resilient and low-carbon economy by 2050, with institutions obliged to conduct business in a way that doesn't degrade the environment are at risk.

A recent review of its Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy pointed to a number of gaps causing adverse environmental and social effects.

Increased use of agro chemicals, inefficient cook stove technologies and dependence on charcoal, as well as inefficient water resource use and management are some of these unwanted practices.

Despite other key programmes being on track, off-grid energy consumption remained at one per cent even though government set 22 per cent target in the next two years.
