Semi-Arid Farmers in Murang'a, Kenya, to Benefit from Irrigation Fund

Farmers in semi-arid parts of Murang’a County will benefit from a Sh3.5 billion irrigation water funding courtesy of a partnership with Belgium.
The scheme will benefit an estimated 150,000 farmers who have been crippled by unpredictable rainfall, with horticulture sector a major target.
According to area governor Mwangi wa Iria, implementation of the first of the three phases has commenced with drilling of 15 boreholes in the lowlands of Gatanga, Maragua, Kiharu and Kandara with 50 others still in the pipeline.
“The agreement was signed in November 2016 and the Belgium government committed a Sh3 billion grant for the project. It was signed under bilateral relations agreement with the Kenyan government,” said Wa Iria.
