King of Morocco Warns Climate Change Will See 60 Million Displaced by 2020

The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, gave a dire warning as the COP22 climate summit unwinds in Marrakech. Addressing the Africa Action Summit, the king anticipated that around 60 million people in Africa face displacement by 2020 due to climate change.

The Moroccan leader estimated that there were up to 10 million people that had already been displaced in Africa and that “by 2020, nearly 60 million people will be displaced because of water scarcity if no measures are taken in this regard.”

The leader said that while Africa was the hardest hit by climate change, its contribution was tiny compared to the rest of the world. “Our continent is only responsible for only 4 percent of greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.
