Efforts Being Made to Exploit Ethiopia's Irrigation Potential
Though the country has five million hectare irrigable land and abundant water resource, much has not been done in the sector.
Sub-saharan Africa is blessed with abundant water resources as well as diverse agro-ecosystem but agricultural produce is low. The practice of irrigation is not popular in the region and is the lowest in the world. Making effective use of available water helps improve productivity and reduce poverty as well.
Cognizant of this, the government of Ethiopia has been aggressively working for the development of irrigation. The role and contribution of irrigation development is vital to attain target to harvest 300 million quintals this crop season.
