Following the wipe out of bananas in Thyolo, Mulanje and other districts such as Nkhatabay and Karonga due to the banana bunchy top, government will in the next two weeks start the re-introduction of an improved banana variety in an effort to revamp the banana production.

In the two districts people relied on banana production for both commercial and domestic use, Mulanje and Thyolo have been picked for the pilot phase according to the crop protection officer for Blantyre Agricultural Development Division (ADD), Joyce Nthenda.

The World Bank through the Agricultural Sector Wide Approach (ASWAP) program has assisted government to reintroduce an improved banana crop in the affected districts starting with pilot project in Thyolo and Mulanje," explains Nthenda.
