South African Government Sets Aside Rn500m to Deal with Climate Change Drought
Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says South Africa must start to look at long-term interventions to mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought.
Delivering her budget speech in parliament on Wednesday, Mokonyane announced a R500-million plan to upgrade dams and further maintain the country’s water infrastructure.
The minister also announced the allocation of millions of rand for desalination projects, with other operations to clean river and water-catchment systems.
"We have had a few municipalities in South Africa that have been doing desalination on a small scale, but now with the partnership we have entered into with the bi-national agreement with Iran we want to go full steam. And this focus of this government is that we will focus on the coastal municipalities, starting here in the Western Cape, moving up to KwaZulu-Natal," Mokonyane said.
