Cheaper Backup Green Energy for the Home in South Africa
The renewable energy division of Italy’s main power utility, Enel Green Power SpA, has started deploying a version of Tesla’s home-power kit in South Africa.
Bloomberg reported that this rollout initiative is to mitigate the effects of increasing electricity tariffs on South African consumers.
Enel Green Power's chief executive officer Francesco Venturini , told Bloomberg in an interview that with the country’s tariff increase, which has already come into effect for direct Eskom customers, Tesla’s battery systems could become more attractive to customers seeking to reliably store self-generated renewable energy at home.
“Now that the [electricity] prices are going up, people are going to look at entirely different solutions. There is a section of the population that can afford to buy backup power for the house.”
